Corrie McKeague, a 23-year-old Scottish RAF gunner, disappeared in Suffolk in September 2016 after being seen entering a bin-loading area following a night out. An inquest concluded he likely fell asleep inside a commercial waste bin, which was emptied into a lorry and taken to landfill, although his remains have never been found. His mother says the loss remains painful a decade later.

Police spent 137 days searching a Cambridgeshire landfill, examining more than 7,000 tons of rubbish, at a cost of £2.1 million. The investigation followed evidence that a bin collected near the area where McKeague vanished weighed 116kg, significantly above normal. Suffolk Constabulary says the active inquiry is closed unless credible new information emerges; McKeague’s daughter was born eight months after his disappearance.
