Speaking at the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, Chu stated he is not yet considering potential actors for the lead role, despite receiving hundreds of unsolicited audition emails from people worldwide hoping to play the pop star.

Writer Liz Meriwether is currently adapting Spears' 2023 bestselling memoir *The Woman in Me* for Universal Pictures, with Chu having reviewed portions of her work and praising it as "incredible, profound, beautiful." The project was first announced in 2024 with Marc Platt producing; Meriwether, known for creating *New Girl*, joined as screenwriter earlier this year and has noted the challenge of condensing Spears' story into a two-hour film format rather than a longer serialised narrative. No actors have been officially cast.
