Businessman dubbed the Wolf of Essex who masterminded £1.3m Ponzi fraud that left countless victims ‘financially ruined’ is jailed

Daily Mail · 54 minutes ago

James Gillingham, 38, has been jailed for five-and-a-half years for masterminding a £1.3 million Ponzi fraud scheme that ruined the finances of numerous investors. Between 2015 and 2016, his gang used names of television and film characters to pose as brokers, cold-calling victims and pressuring them into investing through a fake trading platform offering generous returns. The case demonstrates the sophisticated deception tactics used in such investment scams and the vulnerability of ordinary people to financial fraud.

The scheme defrauded 74 victims of £1.255 million, with the largest individual loss being £133,900. Gillingham's accomplices posed as brokers using fictional aliases including 'Jonathan Hart', 'Harvey Specter' and characters from The Riot Club, whilst claiming to operate from prestigious London offices at Canary Wharf and the Gherkin. Rather than investing victim funds, Gillingham diverted approximately £650,000 to staff salaries (including over £200,000 for himself), business costs and false dividend payments to other investors. By October 2016, investors lost access to their accounts entirely. Gillingham evaded capture by leaving the UK in 2016 and was arrested at Heathrow in August 2025 after deportation from Singapore.
