Discord is introducing a global age-assurance system that estimates users’ age groups automatically, following criticism of its previous selfie and ID-based verification process. The system, launching everywhere except Australia and the UK, is intended to improve protections for teenagers while reducing the need for users to submit sensitive biometric information.

Discord will assess signals such as account age, activity levels, account history, and connected servers, while stating that it will not analyse messages, calls or other content. Users estimated to be aged 13–17 will receive restrictions including sensitive-content filters and limited access to adult servers and messaging features; Discord expects 90% of users will not need to verify their age manually. Alternative checks include face or ID scans, credit cards, app stores, Google Wallet and AgeKey, with users able to challenge incorrect classifications.
