In 1966, Phil Collins discovered The Action while attending London clubs, and their energetic blend of beat, Motown influence and musicianship made a lasting impression on him. Although the band achieved little commercial success, their performances helped guide Collins towards a career in progressive music and influenced the theatrical, eclectic style he later brought to Genesis.
The Action attracted the attention of Beatles producer George Martin, who worked on recordings including ‘I’ll Keep Holding On’, a Motown cover that remains one of Collins’ favourite songs. Despite Martin’s involvement, the band’s singles failed to chart and reportedly sold fewer than 100 copies, while Collins went on to sell 158 million solo records and a further 115 million with Genesis.
