CNN CEO Mark Thompson has stated that the network is fighting for fundamental constitutional rights following President Donald Trump's ban on CNN's White House access. CNN, Politico and MS NOW filed a lawsuit on Monday challenging the ban as a violation of the First and Fifth Amendments, with Thompson telling employees during a town hall that the outlets are defending the right to hold any administration accountable. A federal judge held a hearing on the case on Wednesday afternoon.

Paramount's acquisition of CNN is expected to close around 1 October, following the settlement of a separate state attorneys general lawsuit. Thompson indicated that Paramount has not yet disclosed its plans for CNN and suggested the takeover should not be assumed to result in a merger with CBS News. Thompson, who joined CNN in 2023 and has been integrating the network's linear and digital operations, stated he wishes to remain in his position if Paramount finds his continued leadership useful. When the Paramount transaction closes, it will be CNN's fourth parent company in the past decade.
