Discord rolls out algorithmic age checks after months of delays
Discord is introducing an age-verification system after delaying it for more than six months amid user opposition. Its algorithms will estimate whether accounts belong to adults or children, while Discord says more than 90% of users will not need to confirm their age and that messages and voice calls will not be analysed.
The system assesses account metadata, engagement, community context, device information and social connections, with its main model mapping relationships between users, servers and games into numerical profiles. Users who cannot be classified confidently may verify their age through AgeKey, a credit-card check, or age-range information shared by Apple or Google; accounts identified as belonging to teenagers will face restrictions, including routing messages from non-friends into a request inbox.
