She felt pressure to handle the moment sensitively because of intense expectations from fans of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, but said early audience reactions, including from book readers, were overwhelmingly positive.

The film follows Olive and Adam, whose fake relationship gradually becomes genuine amid academic and personal complications. Scanlon prioritised establishing the chemistry in their chaotic first-kiss scene during the first week of filming, while moving Dr Tom Benton’s sexually coercive job offer to follow the couple’s intimate night, creating a sharper emotional reversal and highlighting the film’s sexual-harassment storyline.
