British taxpayers face potential substantial increases in funding for the UK's Channel security deal with France. The Home Secretary agreed a three-year deal worth £662 million in April 2024, but a French parliamentary commission has warned costs could rise by 40% if migration attempts across the Channel persist, potentially reaching over €1 billion (approximately £860 million) at renewal time.

The current deal represents an increase from the previous £479 million agreement signed by the Conservative government in 2023. According to the French commission's findings, approximately one-third of all migrants illegally entering the EU—about 60,000 out of 170,000 last year—target the UK because of its generous asylum policies. The commission noted that 71% of those who successfully cross the English Channel or North Sea are subsequently granted refugee status, which French politicians argue incentivises migrants to attempt the crossing.
