Residents of the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky are trapped amid shelling, severe shortages of food, water, medicine and power. Civilians face deadly risks when travelling for supplies, while children are reportedly suffering malnutrition and lack of healthcare and education.
Oleshky’s population has fallen from about 24,000 before Russia’s full-scale invasion to an estimated 6,000, including 200 children. The city has had no functioning shops, gas, electricity or running water since the 2023 destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Dam; residents now eat garden weeds, and a couple collecting food were reportedly killed by a drone after missing curfew.
