A 12-year-old girl, Angel Karanja, took her own life after finding the move to a larger secondary school difficult, an inquest in Bournemouth heard. Her father said she became increasingly withdrawn, missed classes and was “almost nocturnal” while spending long periods on her phone, although the coroner said the evidence did not explain her intention.

Angel joined Cornerstone Academy in Poole the previous year, and her attendance, grades and wellbeing reportedly deteriorated before improving as she made friends. She was found dead at home on 17 March after receiving Snapchat messages as late as 5am; searches of her devices found no evidence of cyberbullying or suicide-related searches, and she left no note.
