John Malkovich has been selected for the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, with the honour to be presented during the festival’s 42nd edition from 3–13 February 2027. The announcement adds to growing awards attention for his performance in Martin McDonagh’s upcoming black comedy *Wild Horse Nine*, and follows last year’s recipient Michael B. Jordan later winning the Best Actor Oscar.
Malkovich, a two-time Oscar nominee, won Best Actor at this year’s Venice Film Festival for *Wild Horse Nine*. He stars alongside Sam Rockwell as CIA agents travelling from Santiago to Easter Island on the eve of Chile’s 1973 coup, where they confront their pasts and become caught up in present-day conspiracies; the Searchlight Pictures film is due in cinemas on 6 November. SBIFF executive director Roger Durling praised the performance for combining pathos, volatility, vulnerability and tenderness.
