‘We all thought we were bringing extraction to the masses, and we didn’t’

Bungie has acknowledged that Marathon’s launch failed to attract as broad an audience as intended because its extraction-shooter format was too difficult and repetitive for many players. The studio now plans to make the game more accessible and closer to a broader Bungie-style experience by adding substantial PvE and PvP content, alongside stronger storytelling.

The December Symbiosis update will introduce a permanent PvE mode, an expanded Perimeter area, improved onboarding, a new character shell and a social space. A larger update planned for March 2027 will connect PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences, expand progression and narrative content, add new enemies and introduce another zone; Bungie says these changes are intended to address the game’s limited appeal.
