Crunchyroll has announced that the anime adaptation of FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will begin streaming in January 2027, arriving in the West in a substantially different format than its theatrical run. The anime will premiere as an eight-episode television series rather than a film, with an extended cut that includes additional scenes not featured in the 107-minute theatrical version that concluded its Japanese cinema run. Producer Tetsushi Suzuki issued an apology for not initially disclosing that the theatrical film was actually an edited preview of what was originally conceived as a television series.

The streaming release will begin on 8 January 2027 on Crunchyroll, with new episodes arriving weekly. The production team deliberately premiered the anime in cinemas first to showcase the animation quality on the big screen, but the television adaptation will provide viewers with additional content and a different experience whilst maintaining the same narrative foundation. The series, directed by Kenichi Kutsuna at anime studio Qzil.la, follows the story of a shinobi protector and a lord's grandson attempting to restore balance to a war-torn Japan.
