Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th Congressional District, was arrested during an anti-Netanyahu protest near the United Nations in Manhattan. She was among demonstrators detained after blocking a road ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address, highlighting divisions over US support for Israel and the Gaza conflict.

About 250 people reportedly attended the demonstration, with roughly 80 to 100 arrested after refusing police orders to leave the roadway. New York City Council members Chi Ossé and Alexa Avilés were also detained, while actress Susan Sarandon was reportedly among those arrested. Avila Chevalier, 32, is a Democratic Socialist and prominent pro-Palestinian activist who defeated five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat in June and was endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
