Xi Jinping’s summit with Donald Trump produced a cordial public welcome but limited progress on China’s main objectives. The US-China trade truce was extended only from November to January, leaving disagreements over tariffs, rare earths and advanced semiconductor access unresolved and suggesting Washington wants further concessions from Beijing.

Xi also reiterated that Taiwan is a red line, while Trump has not publicly responded to his call for opposition to Taiwanese independence. The leaders discussed artificial intelligence but announced no clear safeguards or new agreement; China did, however, announce that two pandas will soon arrive in Atlanta, while the lavish ceremony helped Xi project equality with Trump domestically.
