California has officially designated 25 September as Dolly Parton Day, joining dozens of US municipalities with similar commemorations. The date honours Parton’s hit “9 to 5”, while also celebrating her wider cultural legacy and values of kindness, humility and generosity.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed bipartisan legislation SB931 on 20 September, requiring the governor to proclaim the day annually. “9 to 5” was Parton’s first Billboard Hot 100 number one, earned an Oscar nomination and won two Grammys; Tennessee already marks her birthday, 19 January, as Dolly Parton Day, while cities including Nashville, San Francisco and New Orleans are planning celebrations.
