Joy Division’s new boxed set, “Eternal”, chronicles the band’s rapid artistic development and formidable live presence during their 14-month peak. The 14-CD, two-DVD collection highlights how their stark, experimental studio sound translated into something more forceful and confrontational on stage, reinforcing their lasting influence on indie, goth, industrial and electronic music.

The set draws on 18 performances, including soundchecks, with recordings of varying quality sourced from audience tapes, soundboards and more professional recordings. Amsterdam, Birmingham and Manchester’s Factory shows are singled out as the strongest, while the DVDs include BBC appearances and extensive concert and soundcheck footage; much of the material has previously circulated as releases or bootlegs.
