Heidi Overton, President Trump’s nominee to lead the US Food and Drug Administration, faced a Senate hearing on vaccines, vaping, birth control and abortion. She repeatedly declined to say whether Trump could be wrong, despite contradicting his claims that the MMR vaccine may be lethal and that Tylenol during pregnancy causes autism, raising concerns about her independence and judgement.

Overton said the MMR vaccine is safe and effective, while avoiding questions about why she had supported discussing separate measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations. Senators also questioned her opposition to abortion and the FDA’s review of mifepristone, as well as her role in advising Trump; the agency has been without a commissioner since Marty Makary resigned in May.
