Julianne Moore accepted the Golden Icon Award, a lifetime achievement honour, at the Zurich Film Festival on Friday evening, delivering her acceptance speech in German. The Oscar-winning actress was joined at the ceremony by Jesse Eisenberg, who directs her in his latest film The Debut, a musical comedy that premiered at the festival's 22nd edition in Switzerland this week. Moore's recognition is significant as it celebrates her decades of acclaimed performances and enduring impact on cinema.

Moore drew upon her personal history during her speech, crediting a childhood spent in Germany with shaping her career path. She recalled how a teacher in Germany encouraged her ambitions as an actress, noting that had she not moved to Europe with her parents as a teenager, she would not have achieved the successful life and career she enjoys today. The Debut follows Moore's character Mona Friedman, a shy housewife cast in a minor community theatre role who becomes a committed method actor willing to challenge the show's director, played by Paul Giamatti. Eisenberg emphasised Moore's indispensability to the project, stating that he could not have made the film with any other performer. Additionally, Irish-British filmmaker Martin McDonagh received the festival's A Tribute To… Award for his film Wild Horse Nine, a CIA thriller set on Easter Island during the Chilean political crisis of 1973, which has already generated significant Oscar buzz.
