Modern PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles are designed to operate safely either vertically or horizontally, so orientation largely depends on available space and personal preference. The main concern is airflow: consoles should sit on a stable surface with clear vents, adequate space from walls and no devices stacked on top. Vertical placement saves room but is easier to knock over, while horizontal placement is more stable and often better for crowded or low surfaces.

Disc-reading concerns are largely outdated, as current consoles can use discs in either position, although horizontal placement may make disc orientation easier to remember. Sony recommends keeping the PS5 at least four inches from walls, while heat, dust and blocked vents can cause overheating regardless of orientation. Regular cleaning, careful cable placement and avoiding cramped or dusty areas are more important for longevity than whether the console stands upright or lies flat.
