“Avengers: Endgame Encore” returned to the top of the North American box office seven years after its original release, taking $11.2 million on Friday from 3,060 cinemas. The Marvel re-release is expected to make about $26 million over the weekend, helped by anticipation for “Avengers: Doomsday”, due in December.

A24’s “Primetime” opened second with $8.49 million, while “The Heart of the Beast” placed third with $7.45 million. “Resident Evil” fell to fourth after last week’s franchise-best opening, earning $6.9 million, and animated film “Forgotten Island” debuted in fifth with $4.38 million; projected weekend totals were approximately $20.5 million, $20 million, $23.5 million and $11.5 million respectively.
