Gilmour catalyst, impressive Welsh, but same issue for Scotland?

BBC Sport · 9 hours ago

Scotland began Sebastien Pocognoli’s reign with a goalless Nations League draw against Slovenia, overcoming a disjointed first half to dominate after the interval. The improved performance offered encouragement, but the lack of a cutting edge in front of goal remained a familiar concern despite creating enough chances to win.

Billy Gilmour was central to the revival, playing more advanced initially before moving deeper at half-time and delivering 32 passes into the final third, the most by any player. Debutant Stephen Welsh also grew into the match from the left of a back three, helping Scotland defend higher and retain possession, while Oli McBurnie returned to the team as Pocognoli experimented with a new shape and tactical approach.

  • Scotland drew 0-0 with Slovenia in Pocognoli’s first match.
  • Gilmour transformed Scotland’s second-half performance.
  • Missed chances remain a concern for the new era.
