A black bear attacked Jeff and Mallory Wilson at their rural home in Northern California after Jeff went outside following their dog Cassie’s bark. Cassie intervened, helping the couple drive the bear away, but suffered fatal injuries; both owners were hospitalised and face ongoing treatment.

The attack occurred on 19 September in Trinity County, with Jeff sustaining broken ribs and bite and claw wounds, while Mallory suffered serious head and facial injuries. The couple, who run the off-grid Radio Ranch retreat, have cancelled bookings while recovering and assisting an investigation; a fundraiser had raised more than $16,000 towards medical, veterinary and property-related costs. California wildlife officials said injuries from black bear attacks are rare and advised securing attractants, keeping pets indoors at night where possible, and fighting back during an attack.
