Paul McCartney has admitted to being jealous of Elton John's songwriting prowess during the 1970s. After The Beatles disbanded, McCartney worked to establish himself as a solo artist, eventually finding success with albums like Band on the Run. As the musical landscape evolved, he observed Elton John producing hits at a remarkable rate through his distinctive collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin, a method McCartney found both admirable and enviable.

McCartney explained his admiration for the John-Taupin partnership, noting that whilst he and John Lennon had worked together playing instruments and writing both words and music, Elton John's approach was different and fascinating. Taupin would provide written lyrics, which John would then transform into accomplished melodies, churning out commercially successful songs with remarkable consistency. McCartney acknowledged that despite his own considerable achievements, he was "slightly jealous" of this collaborative method and the ease with which Elton John produced his material, recognising it as another significant influence on popular music following The Beatles' legacy.
