A 66-year-old Washington state man, Gary Idleburg, died after falling an estimated 800 to 1,000 feet while hiking on Sauk Mountain in the Northern Cascades. His death occurred one day after another hiker was found dead on the same mountain, highlighting the dangers of its steep and difficult terrain.

Witnesses reported Idleburg’s fall from a switchback trail, and emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene despite attempting life-saving measures. The previous day, search teams found 78-year-old Peter Kalapaca, who had been missing for a day; the operation involved ground teams, aircraft, air-scent dogs and mountain rescue personnel.
