Tigst Assefa won the Berlin Marathon despite suffering an apparent tendon injury and collapsing after crossing the finish line. She had looked on course to break the women’s world record, but slowed sharply in the closing stages, narrowly missing Ruth Chepngetich’s mark.

Assefa finished in 2:11:04, the third-fastest time in history and a new Berlin course record, improving on her 2023 mark of 2:11:53. She led by a minute at 15km and remained ahead of record pace at 35km; all of the top five women were Ethiopian, while Guye Adola won the men’s race in 2:02:50.
