The GTA Series is a Game Preservation Nightmare

Polygon · 1 hour ago

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto catalogue is unusually difficult to access on modern consoles, despite the series’ enormous cultural and commercial importance. On PS5, 11 of 16 existing GTA games, including major expansions and spin-offs, cannot be played, highlighting broader concerns about video-game preservation and Rockstar’s apparent lack of commitment to its older work.

Only GTA 5, GTA Online and the original 3D trilogy remain widely available on current platforms. GTA 4 and its expansions can still be played on PC and Xbox, while several early and handheld titles require old hardware, mobile versions, or unofficial copies and modifications; the article also criticises the poorly received 2021 Definitive Edition remasters as evidence of inadequate care.

  • Most GTA games are unavailable on modern PlayStation consoles.
  • Rockstar preserves only its biggest, most profitable entries.
  • Poor remasters have further damaged confidence in its stewardship.
