A controversial modernist glass mansion featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs has gone on sale in Keston Park, near Orpington, Kent, for almost £5 million. The home divided local opinion because its stark, highly contemporary design contrasted sharply with the estate’s mock-period houses, while presenter Kevin McCloud questioned whether its scale and appearance suited the site.

Called Sylvan Glade, the six-bedroom property covers about 6,949 sq ft and includes a cinema room, library, six-metre-high living space, extensive glazing, landscaped gardens and a self-contained one-bedroom flat. Planning approval took five years and two redesigns, while construction costs rose from an initial £1 million budget to about £1.6 million; the asking price was recently reduced from £5.75 million.
