Tom Kim is leaving the Presidents Cup early to compete for South Korea at the Asian Games in Japan, where a gold medal could exempt him from mandatory military service. Although he has played a key role for the International team, earning three points from a possible four, securing exemption is considered more important because South Korean men generally must complete 18–21 months of service.

Kim is scheduled to face Wyndham Clark in Sunday’s singles before flying to Japan, with the Asian Games beginning on Wednesday. South Korean athletes qualify for exemption by winning any Olympic medal or an Asian Games gold medal; Kim narrowly missed an Olympic bronze in 2024, while teammates Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim won gold at the 2023 Asian Games. The 24-year-old, a four-time PGA Tour winner, will compete alongside Do-yeob Moon and S.H. Kim.
