Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s *The Shining* will arrive on HBO Max on 1 October, as part of the service’s Halloween-season film additions. The move matters because the film, now widely regarded as a horror classic, remains a notable example of King disagreeing with an adaptation of his work.

King objected to the film’s departure from his novel, particularly its portrayal of Jack Torrance as a frightening antagonist rather than a more tragic figure. HBO Max also carries several other King adaptations, while Prime Video is due to release Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode *Carrie* series on 7 October, starring Summer H. Howell.
