Bread, soft rock pioneers of the 1970s, got their distinctive name from an unexpected source: a bread truck that drove past whilst the band members were brainstorming names in 1968. Formed by David Gates, Robb Royer and Jimmy Griffin, the band became known for contemplative ballads like their 1972 hit "Baby I'm-a Want You", which showcased Gates' hushed vocal style and thoughtful songwriting. Gates reasoned that the name was perfect because it began with 'B' like The Beatles and The Bee Gees, and held universal appeal that could be interpreted in multiple ways.

Before Bread's formation, frontman David Gates had already established himself as a prolific songwriter and musician in Los Angeles. Having moved to the city in 1960 with only $200 to his name, he worked as a music copyist, studio musician and producer, collaborating with artists including The Monkees, Elvis Presley and Brian Wilson. During their career, Bread charted eleven singles on the Billboard charts, all written and performed by Gates, which eventually led to tensions with guitarist Jimmy Griffin, who felt underrepresented despite his contributions to the band's arrangements. The band disbanded in 1973 but reunited briefly in 1976 to record one final album.
