Ropin' the Wind spent 18 nonconsecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 between 1991 and 1992, whilst holding the No. 1 position on the country chart for 41 weeks—Brooks' longest run at that summit. The album featured several hits, including "Rodeo," "Papa Loved Mama," and "What She's Doing Now," but "Shameless" became the standout success and remains a fan favourite. The track is a cover of a Billy Joel song that Brooks discovered through a CD club selection; when he contacted Joel's team hoping to record it, they responded with a letter expressing their honour at his choice.
