Cameron Nation, a convicted child sex offender and former mayor of Moonee Valley City Council, has been released on bail just four days into a three-month prison sentence after a court deemed him to pose no risk to the public. The 42-year-old's identity was only revealed last week when a media suppression order, imposed to protect his mental health, was lifted. His case centres on the sexual assault of a 17-year-old boy in 2019, whom he had met years earlier whilst working as director and head coach of swimming clubs in Melbourne's north-west.

Nation had contacted the teenager to congratulate him on coming out as gay, and their subsequent messages turned sexual before Nation lured the victim to his home where they inhaled nitrous oxide. The victim, who became incapacitated and felt he had no control over his body, was then sexually assaulted. Nation pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault earlier this month and was sentenced on Thursday to three months in prison plus an 18-month community corrections order. Prosecutors did not oppose his release on bail but sought strict conditions, including prohibiting him from leaving Victoria. His appeal is scheduled to be heard in the County Court on 11 February 2026.
