YouTube Exec Sees More ‘Obsession’-, ‘Backrooms’-Style Smashes Hitting Box Office – and Oscars
YouTube’s EMEA vice-president, Pedro Pina, expects more online video creators to move into cinema successfully, pointing to horror films *Obsession* and *Backrooms* as examples. Speaking at Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid, he said creators are shaping culture and suggested their work could gain recognition at major awards such as the Emmys and Oscars.
Pina also said YouTube is trying to explain better to media companies how its platform works, including content protection, audience reach and monetisation. He said the effort began about three years ago and that uploads from traditional media companies are increasing. The industry event runs through Friday.
