New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced the city’s first municipal strategy to combat antisemitism, describing it as a plan to improve prevention, education, security and support for Jewish residents. The announcement comes amid rising reported anti-Jewish hate crime figures and a public dispute with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently called Mamdani “the antisemitic mayor of New York”.

The city says the strategy represents a $7.4 million investment. NYPD data cited in the article records 205 confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes from January to July 2026, up from 189 over the same period in 2025; July’s count rose from 15 to 23. By the end of August, antisemitic hate crimes were reported to be up 9 per cent year to date, while confirmed hate crimes overall had increased by 16 per cent. Mamdani has called for Netanyahu’s arrest over the war in Gaza, while acknowledging the city cannot carry out the International Criminal Court warrant; he has also revoked his predecessor’s orders adopting the IHRA definition of antisemitism and restricting boycotts of Israel.
