Sony has introduced a lottery system for PS5 Pro purchases in Japan to address ongoing supply shortages. The measure is designed to prevent scalpers from acquiring units for resale and to ensure that consoles go to genuine players rather than foreign visitors buying during trips.

To be eligible, customers must have a Japanese PlayStation Network account and have logged at least 60 hours of gameplay on either PS5 or PS4 (or both) between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. Purchasing applications open on October 7, with eligible approved buyers able to purchase between October 26 and November 2. The PS5 Pro shortage stems from broader component supply constraints that Sony expects to persist until early 2027, exacerbated by strong demand following the announcement of GTA VI, which is PS5 Pro Enhanced.
