Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old transgender executive at the New York Times and head of engineering for games player experience, was fatally shot multiple times in a parking lot in Dublin, California on Saturday. His in-laws, 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, were arrested and charged with his murder. His cousin speculates the killing was motivated by the in-laws' desire to support his estranged wife's custody bid during an ongoing bitter family dispute.

McKinsey had been locked in a custody battle with his estranged wife Candice Jang, who filed for divorce in December 2025 and obtained a domestic violence prevention order against him after alleging abuse over a 17-year period. McKinsey was facing charges for cruelty to a child and corporal injury to a child (both misdemeanours) and was on $50,000 bail; he had been attempting to enter a mental health diversion programme that would have resulted in the charges being dropped. He had countered his wife's abuse allegations with his own claims that she was the abusive party, and accused his in-laws of making derogatory anti-LGBTQ+ comments about him and their children.
