Best friend of Constable Mia Lay pays heartbreaking tribute after horror crash death – as her father says he hopes no one is found at fault

Daily Mail · 2 hours ago

Constable Mia Lay, a 20-year-old police officer, was killed when her patrol car crashed at high speed into a tree in Redfern, Sydney, early on Friday morning. The vehicle, driven by Constable Brandon Torrisi, 24, struck the tree whilst responding to reports of a stolen car in nearby Glebe. The impact was so severe that it tore the Volkswagen Tiguan apart, killing Constable Lay instantly. Her death has prompted heartfelt tributes from those who knew her, whilst authorities investigate the circumstances of the crash.

Police sources indicate the vehicle was travelling at more than 150km/h at the time of the collision. Constable Lay had only recently graduated from the police academy in May 2025 and was in the early stages of her career with NSW Police. Her best friend, Elka Summer, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, remembering Mia as "courageous and passionate" and reflecting on their close friendship. Her father, Clem Lay, expressed hope that no one would be found at fault for the incident, though authorities have not ruled out potential charges relating to excessive speed. A fundraiser established in her memory has already raised more than $28,000 for her family's ongoing support.
