The Chicks opened their Taking the Long Way 20th anniversary tour at Detroit’s Fox Theatre, celebrating the album that earned five Grammy Awards in 2007. The tour revisits a record shaped in part by the backlash to Natalie Maines’s 2003 criticism of the Iraq invasion, including the band’s response, “Not Ready to Make Nice”.
The 23-song concert had two acts: the trio performed all 14 tracks from the album, then played hits including “Goodbye Earl”, “Cowboy Take Me Away”, “Landslide” and “Gaslighter”. The tour continues with two nights in Chicago and runs through November, ending with three Los Angeles dates on 1–3 November. An expanded edition of the album, with five bonus tracks, is due on 2 October.
