Samsung unveils open-ear Galaxy Buds On, with South Korea launch set for October

Engadget ·

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Buds On, its first clip-on earbuds, in South Korea, joining a trend popularised by competitors like Bose, Huawei and Shokz. The clip-on design appeals to users who dislike in-ear earbuds, as it leaves the ear canal open and avoids the uncomfortable sensation of insertion. To address the sound leakage problem common to this design, Samsung has included a TwinBoost speaker system and automatic volume adjustment.

The Galaxy Buds On will launch in South Korea on 27 October, priced at 299,000 won, exclusively in black at launch. Galaxy device owners receive additional features including head gesture call controls, Gemini Live integration and a Quick Voice Memo function. Samsung has confirmed a global rollout is planned, but has not yet announced specific regions, international dates or pricing details.

Clip-on earbuds leave the ear canal open rather than sitting inside it, allowing users to hear their surroundings whilst enjoying audio. Many people prefer this design because it avoids the discomfort of inserting something into the ear and does not block ambient sound. This appeals to those who have previously rejected standard earbuds for comfort or convenience reasons.

Several major technology companies including Bose, Huawei and Shokz have recently launched clip-on earbud models, indicating this design is becoming a mainstream alternative to traditional in-ear headphones. The main drawback of open-ear designs is sound leakage—audio bleeding into the surrounding environment—which manufacturers are now trying to solve through improved speaker systems and volume management technology. Samsung's entry into this market segment suggests significant consumer demand for an alternative to the traditional earbud format.
