Tribunal rejects accountant’s claims after false stalking allegations at Historic England

Daily Mail ·

An accountant at Historic England reported colleagues to police for stalking after being asked to attend an in-person performance meeting, an employment tribunal heard. Tanya Langston's stalking claims were unsubstantiated; Bristol Employment Tribunal found her accusations were part of a deliberate, calculated scheme to tarnish her colleagues' reputations and cause them distress. Miss Langston was subsequently dismissed and sued for discrimination and unfair dismissal, but the tribunal rejected her claims.

Miss Langston joined Historic England in 2018 and was promoted to Assistant Systems Accountant in 2021, but began making significant errors in her work by late 2022 and resisted efforts to correct or train her. In May 2023, following inappropriate messages she had sent to her manager and hostile behaviour during performance reviews, she was suspended and then filed a grievance alleging 10 colleagues had conspired against her. She claimed her manager was stalking her through Skype and a dating app, later characterising the requirement to attend in-person meetings as a form of control exerted through repeated contact.

  • Employment tribunal dismissed accountant's stalking claims against Historic England colleagues.
  • Tribunal found allegations were deliberate scheme to cause workplace distress.
  • Woman had made serious errors at work before lodging grievances.

Historic England is the public body responsible for preserving England's historic buildings and heritage. Tanya Langston was an accountant who worked there, having joined in 2018 and progressing to Assistant Systems Accountant in 2021.

From late 2022, Langston's work performance deteriorated significantly as she made errors and resisted training and correction efforts. In May 2023, after sending inappropriate messages to her manager and behaving hostilely during performance reviews, she was suspended from her post.

Following her suspension, Langston alleged that colleagues were conspiring against her and that her manager was stalking her through Skype and a dating app. An employment tribunal found these allegations false and part of a deliberate scheme to damage her colleagues' reputations. It rejected her subsequent claims of discrimination and unfair dismissal.
