Amazon urges US communities to back AI data centre expansion

The Verge ·

Amazon has launched a blog post urging communities to support AI data centre development, warning that blocking such projects could damage the US economy and undermine national security in competition with other nations. CEO Matt Garman argued that whilst concerns around jobs, energy demands and environmental impact are "important questions," they must not be confused with "misinformation and outright lies" about data centres, claiming foreign nations are deliberately spreading falsehoods to slow American progress. With over 100 data centre moratoriums under consideration across the country and public support declining sharply, Amazon is attempting to reshape the narrative around these major infrastructure projects.

As part of its rebuttal, Amazon has codified a "Data Centre Commitment" that includes job creation, protections against local energy rate increases, and a pledge to invest more than $1 billion in neighbouring communities. The company has also abandoned nondisclosure agreements with government agencies, ending what executives described as an outdated practice rooted in industry secrecy, after criticism from Democratic lawmaker Jamie Raskin prompted investigation into secret deals tech companies had struck with local officials.

AI data centres are large facilities housing the computing equipment that powers artificial intelligence systems. These facilities consume huge amounts of electricity and water, raising concerns amongst local communities about environmental impact and effects on energy bills.

Over 100 communities across the United States are considering blocking or pausing data centre development. Residents worry about whether jobs will be created, whether their energy costs will rise, and about environmental damage, whilst some politicians have raised concerns about secret agreements that tech companies made with local government officials.

Amazon argues that blocking such projects could harm America's economic competitiveness and national security relative to other countries. The company has announced it will create jobs, prevent local energy cost increases, and invest over £1 billion in surrounding communities. It has also pledged to end the practice of making secret agreements with government agencies.
