Omaha man, 70, dies after pickup driver runs red light in crash

Christopher Szalkowski, 70, died after his vintage Porsche 911 was hit by a pickup in Omaha, Nebraska, on Sunday afternoon. Police say the pickup driver, Jose Ortega-Romero, ran a red light; the crash has led to motor vehicle homicide charges and an immigration detainer.

Szalkowski was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. Deputies say Ortega-Romero, 32, had no US identification or operator’s licence and was charged with disobeying a stop light, driving without a licence and misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide. After posting bond, he was taken into custody by Nebraska State Patrol under an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
