Olise inspires France to emphatic Nations League comeback against Belgium

The Guardian ·

Michael Olise starred as France mounted a dramatic comeback to defeat Belgium 4-1 in the Nations League at the Stade de France, securing Zinedine Zidane's first home victory since taking charge. Belgium had taken an early lead through Dodi Lukébakio in the first half, appearing on course for their first competitive win over France in 45 years, but the hosts turned the match on its head with a blistering finish.

France scored all four goals in a stunning 14-minute spell late in the match, with Désiré Doué equalising in the 77th minute before Olise assisted Rayan Cherki to go ahead. Olise then added two goals himself in the 88th minute and stoppage time to complete the remarkable turnaround. The victory moves France three points clear at the top of Group A1 and preserves Zidane's unbeaten record. Italy beat Turkey 3-1 and Hungary defeated Ukraine 2-1 in other matches.

The UEFA Nations League is a competitive international football tournament established to provide regular fixtures between European nations outside the World Cup and Euros calendars. The competition features different tiers, with Group A1 representing the highest division where the strongest sides compete.

Zinedine Zidane, one of football's greatest players, recently took over as manager of the French national team. He was seeking to establish his record at the highest international level after his previous success managing club sides.

France and Belgium are neighbouring rivals within European football. Belgium has not defeated France in a competitive match since 1979, making any victory against the French a significant outcome.
