Anthropic Claude subscription plan provides more value than OpenAI’s, study says
Research firm SemiAnalysis has determined that Anthropic's Claude subscription plan offers substantially better value than OpenAI's equivalent offerings. The analysis is significant because subscriptions remain the primary way individuals and small businesses access AI services, and comes after OpenAI recently halved the value of its $200-per-month plan.
According to SemiAnalysis, Claude Pro at $20 per month provides 2.9 billion tokens monthly compared to ChatGPT's 1 billion tokens at the same price point—with the research firm claiming Claude offers approximately five times the API-equivalent value overall. However, other metrics tell different stories: measured by cost per task, OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol appears more affordable, suggesting that "best value" depends on how the model is used. Enterprise customers face larger challenges, with McKinsey reporting that 93 per cent of businesses exceeded their AI budgets as companies deploy AI more widely and encounter rising token costs.

Anthropic and OpenAI are two major artificial intelligence companies offering subscription plans to individual users and small businesses. These paid services are the primary way most people currently access AI chat tools, making their pricing and what they provide an important consideration for consumers.
AI subscriptions differ in how much computational work they allow each month and how well they suit different tasks. Determining which subscription offers the best value depends on individual needs and usage patterns.
Businesses have increasingly focused on the costs of artificial intelligence as they deploy the technology more widely. Many organisations have found their actual AI spending exceeds their initial budgets, making questions about value and cost-effectiveness central to selecting which subscription services to use.
Both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
SemiAnalysis's rigorous analysis demonstrates Claude Pro delivers nearly 2.9 billion monthly tokens against ChatGPT's 1 billion at equivalent cost—a threefold surplus translating to five times the API-equivalent value. For subscription users, particularly individuals and small businesses operating under budget constraints, this objective abundance of tokens means substantially lower per-token costs and greater capacity to execute AI tasks. The empirical measurement provides clear evidence that Claude subscribers receive more computational resources for their investment.
The case against
Raw token abundance misleads when practical utility depends on task completion and output quality rather than raw capacity consumption. OpenAI's superior cost-per-task efficiency suggests their models accomplish equivalent work with fewer tokens, making cost-per-completed-task a more meaningful value metric than token quantity. The optimal choice varies by use case—users rarely exhausting their token limits derive no benefit from oversupply, whilst those prioritising output quality and focused work may achieve better value through OpenAI's more efficient approach.
