Jaguar’s first EV looks just like its divisive concept car

The Verge ·

Jaguar has revealed the Type 01, a four-door electric grand tourer that closely follows the design of its divisive Type 00 concept. The car is significant as Jaguar’s most powerful road model to date and shows the company carrying the concept’s distinctive styling into production.

Three motors produce up to 1,016 horsepower and 1,365Nm of torque, enabling 0–62mph in 3.2 seconds. Jaguar says the 118kWh battery offers up to 400 miles of range, while 350kW charging can add 200 miles in 13 minutes; orders are expected in early 2027, with deliveries later that year, and one version is teased at $130,500.

Jaguar is a British luxury car maker known for distinctive high-performance vehicles, traditionally powered by petrol engines. The company is now transforming itself into an electric manufacturer, and the Type 01 is its first fully electric production car. This represents a significant shift for a brand with over a century of history built on performance and iconic styling.

The Type 01 is a four-door electric grand tourer, designed to combine acceleration with comfort for longer journeys. Its styling closely follows a concept car called the Type 00, which prompted divided reactions when revealed. By bringing this distinctive design concept into production, Jaguar is adopting a radically different visual identity compared to its traditional models.

This transition matters because Jaguar, like all car makers, must adapt to stricter environmental regulations and changing market conditions. The Type 01 will serve as a test of whether existing customers embrace the brand's electric transformation. The car is positioned at the premium end of the electric vehicle market, targeting affluent buyers considering a move to electric propulsion.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Jaguar's decision demonstrates design courage in a crowded market where competitors offer similar conventional styling. By committing to the Type 00's distinctive aesthetic, Jaguar establishes strong brand identity and appeals to customers seeking genuine character. Such boldness generates valuable media attention and serves the brand's target audience far better than safe, forgettable design.

The case against

The term 'divisive' indicates material commercial risk in a competitive luxury market. By sticking with a design that many potential customers rejected, Jaguar narrows its appeal precisely when rebuilding brand position. A more moderate design would have preserved distinctiveness whilst broadening customer reach and reducing niche-market risk.
