Laos footballer arrested in connection with alleged match-fixing for betting syndicate

The Guardian ·

Laos international winger Soukphachan Lueanthala is in custody in connection with alleged match-fixing during the 2026 Asean Championship. The Laos Football Federation referred suspected bribery, illegal gambling and match manipulation to police, in a case that raises fresh concern about corruption in Lao football.

Lueanthala, who plays for Salavan United, is suspected of helping organise an operation for a betting syndicate believed to be from Vietnam and acting as a link to other players. The allegations followed Laos’s 7-2 defeat by Myanmar, after earlier group-stage losses of 5-0 to Thailand, 4-0 to Malaysia and 4-1 to the Philippines; neither the federation nor police has confirmed his arrest. Laos has faced previous fixing cases, and one source said national-team players had received as little as $10 a day, while a player allegedly claimed to have fixed three matches for $10,000 each.

Match-fixing occurs when players, officials or others manipulate a game's outcome instead of allowing it to be decided fairly. It typically involves illegal betting operations, where money is won or lost based on predetermined results rather than genuine sporting competition.

Laos has faced previous match-fixing cases, raising concerns about the sport's integrity. Players have reportedly accepted payments to manipulate results, creating a significant problem within the game.

International betting syndicates from across Southeast Asia have been linked to match-fixing operations in regional tournaments. These schemes have reportedly reached Lao football, suggesting the issue affects the country's sporting scene at multiple levels.
