Deafheaven have surprise released a new EP entitled At Work in the Fields of the Bomb, with a music video for lead single "Hunter" premiering at 10 a.m. ET on Friday. The release marks a deliberate shift towards the heavier, more aggressive end of the band's sound, featuring ferocious black metal that recalls bands like Beherit and Immortal rather than the shimmering, cleaner tones of earlier work. The EP explores the stark contrast between the catastrophic implications of nuclear weapons and the mundane systems and everyday choices that enable their production.

The three-track EP—comprising "Hunter," "Three Princes," and "Sorry Laid The Hearth"—takes its title and central concept from Robert Del Tredici's photo book documenting the ordinary places and people involved in nuclear weapons production. The release contemplates how extinction becomes possible through seemingly routine details, available to order via Deafheaven's webstore. The band is currently touring with Mastodon and Alcest as part of the "Poisonous Weapons" tour, scheduled to conclude on 22 October in Atlanta.
