Moment tornado rips through Sicilian tourist hotspot flipping cars days as Europe is lashed by storms and flooding
A violent tornado tore through the Sicilian tourist town of Marsala on Friday morning, causing widespread devastation described as an emergency. The intense whirlwind damaged schools, overturned cars, and left several people injured, with experts suggesting it could be the most intense Sicilian tornado in several decades.
The tornado struck the province of Trapani, particularly affecting Marsala, Petrosino, and Mazara del Vallo. The Alcide De Gasperi school in Strasatti suffered significant damage with windows shattered and fixtures torn off, whilst cars were flipped upside down and one vehicle was flung into a ravine. The Italian fire service deployed five crews to the area, with two people initially treated by paramedics for non-life-threatening injuries, and reinforcements arriving from Palermo and Agrigento.

Sicily is a Mediterranean destination in southern Italy, known for its beaches, historical sites, and tourism industry. It attracts visitors from across Europe and beyond, with many of the island's towns serving as popular holiday locations.
Tornadoes are rare in Sicily and other Mediterranean regions, which makes them particularly noteworthy when they occur. This rarity means that communities and emergency services in the area have less experience dealing with such extreme weather events.
Severe weather is currently affecting much of Southern Europe, with storms and flooding reported across multiple countries. This broader pattern of extreme weather creates the atmospheric conditions in which localised tornado events can develop.
